The results make sense to volunteer Frances Gill, 72, who says helping the students has kept her learning. "It keeps you alert because [the students] know a lot of things," she said.

Students who have worked with the Experience Corps volunteers in their classrooms enjoy the company. "They are fun," says second-grader Kayla Langley of the volunteers, who "make us laugh." The children often treat Gill like a grandmother and enjoy reading next to her and telling her details of their family lives. "They come up to you, and they are leaning on you like a parent. They want to hug you. They are just lovable," Gill said.
